PHOENIX — Jacobsen Construction’s renovation and expansion of the HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center Emergency Department has been announced as the winner of the Best Small Project award in the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southwest region.
A panel of nine judges with expertise in the A/E/C industry scored projects throughout Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico on the criteria of innovation, contributions to the construction industry and the community, the aesthetics and functionality of the project’s design, quality craftsmanship, examples of teamwork and overcoming challenges, and safety record. Projects under $10 million were considered in the Small Projects category.
Renovation work began in late 2022 and entailed a comprehensive remodel and enlargement of the existing emergency department at the HonorHealth Thompson Peak Medical Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. The primary goal was to increase the department’s capacity, enhancing the speed and efficiency of critical emergency care. The expansion saw the department grow to accommodate fourteen patient bays to better handle the volume of visits seen at the facility.
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, several administrative spaces adjacent to the emergency department had been transformed into temporary triage areas to better treat the influx of patients. Following the pandemic’s decline, these temporary spaces were designated for a permanent transformation into fully equipped extensions of the existing emergency department space.
Work on the project included the demolition of some existing rooms, walls and other features; reconfiguring and adding new rooms; the addition of new walls and wall protection existing emergency department space; upgrades to flooring, cabinetry, medical equipment installations and MEP systems; the installation of a new med gas delivery system; the establishment of a new overall emergency department layout centered on the nurses’ station; a complete build out of the expansion areas; and more.
The Best Small Project award will be formally presented at an ENR Southwest luncheon in Phoenix on Nov. 7, where Jacobsen and HonorHealth will get the chance to celebrate their successful partnership on the project, along with design firm Cuningham Group Architecture.
